The year of the AI agent hit a wall

By Booz · August 3, 2026

Everyone called 2026 the year the AI agent would run your business. Fire the front desk. Automate the team. Let the bots handle it.

Here we are, most of the year gone, and the agents hit a wall. Not a small one. Memory, accountability, judgment. The three things that actually make a person good at a job, and the three things the agents turned out to be worst at.

The ones that did work all had something in common. They were pointed at one narrow job, and a human stayed in the loop to catch what the machine missed.

So the real winners this year were not the businesses that bought the most AI. They were the ones that aimed it at a single real problem and kept a person watching it.

That is the whole lesson. The tool was never the hard part. Knowing where to point it was.

What did you try to automate this year that quietly did nothing?
