Most trades are aiming AI at the wrong thing

By Booz · August 4, 2026

About 40 percent of trades businesses now use AI. Most of them use it to write emails a little faster. The phone is still going to voicemail.

A report on AI in the trades this year found the same thing over and over. The contractors who adopted AI mostly point it at the easy stuff. Content. Admin. Writing follow ups. It saves them a few hours a week. Nice, not nothing.

But look at where they did not point it. The missed call at 2pm while they were up on a roof. The quote that went quiet. The invoice nobody chased. The money does not leak in the inbox. It leaks there.

That is the quiet trap of this whole AI moment. It is easiest to aim the shiny new tool at the task that was already annoying, not the task that is actually costing you. So people automate the email and leave the leak running.

Saving four hours writing emails feels like progress. Booking the three jobs a week you were losing to voicemail is progress. Those are not the same size.

If you are going to put AI in your business, do not start with what is annoying. Start with what is leaking. Tell me where that is, and point it there.
